Sadag hosts new support group on mental health

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group, SADAG, recently launched a support group for depression and anxiety related to brain injury.

South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) was excited to launch a new mental health support group for depression and anxiety related to brain injury just recently.

The free mental health support group will be meeting on the second Thursday of every month from 18:00 to 20:00 via Zoom.

According to Tracy Mukute of Sadag, the support group will offer a place of comfort, support and mutual understanding.

She said support groups provide a safe space for people living with mental illness to connect, learn and share with others who have been through similar experiences.

“From time to time, there will be guest speakers and experts who will at times be giving talks to the group. Groups discuss effective ways of coping, and how to support a loved one with their mental Illness. For more information or to attend the free support group, contact Aruna on 0800 212 223,” said Mukute.

Sadag aims to eliminate the discrimination and stigma that surround mental illness, by creating awareness and providing a safe space for people to connect, share and find help.

“This group is one of many run by Sadag, striving to educate patients, families, professionals and the general public on the nature and management of mental illnesses. The majority of Sadag support groups are run by patients or ex-patients who have first-hand experience of mental illness,” she said.

These groups allow members the opportunity to form connections with others experiencing similar troubles and to learn from one another in a non-judgmental, confidential atmosphere. For more information on mental health and wellness visit www.sadag.org
