‘Expel’ the learners who damaged Glenvista High

“Please don’t tell readers that you, the principal, can’t find out who did it; that is not acceptable. Are you saying learners have the run of the school and there is no control?”

The only way to send a strong message to all learners, and not just those at Glenvista High School where learners set fire to the school hall, which cost R400 000, is to dismiss the learners who did the damage.

Please don’t tell readers that you, the principal, can’t find out who did it; that is not acceptable. Are you saying learners have the run of the school and there is no control?

Find those children who have no respect for the good name of the school, the principal and the educators and dismiss them at once. I’m pretty sure the MEC of Gauteng Education, Panyaza Lesufi, will support such action.

You know the names of the children who set the school on fire. Show your pride in your school by naming them and clap and dance as they exit the school for the last time.

“I rushed to the school only to find the hall on fire” – Glenvista high principal

In addition to this, the remaining learners need to form a committee and investigate what fund-raising events they can create, in their own time, to raise R400 000 to repair the damage to the school. Remember, the Department of Education has refused to pay for the damage done by a few learners who do not deserve to attend your school.

In effect, the learners should stand up as your brothers and sisters did to stop the looting a few weeks ago and say “No! Not at my school! We are better than this!”

To the principal and staff, I say do not repair the damage using your limited budget; let the learners look at it every day to remind them of the actions of their fellow learners.

A mature learner who has evolved and is soaking up knowledge and education knows setting fire to their school because they don’t want to write an assessment knows better. It also demonstrates they fear the results of the assessment.

Glenvista High learners, are you ready to cancel out the stupidity of a few learners and stand up for your school, to stand up for what is right, to demonstrate you are not unruly children who insult your educators and your school? Are you ready to take responsibility for the actions of a few fools and punish them and pay for the damage to the school?

If this happens, I will be the first to stand up and salute you!
