Nkosi’s Haven ready to overcome challenges

People are wonderful and although 2020 was a lousy year for everyone, they still gave.

Founder of Nkosi’s Haven Gail Johnson admits that the last year has been difficult for everyone and this year they wish to be stable and overcome challenges.

“Our plans for 2021 are to survive as things are still tough. “Covid-19 has made things difficult and the donor base has shrunk.

“We have an exceptionally high electricity bill that we incurred making a break for outreach, which was our pleasure during the lockdown,” explains Johnson.

Since the start of the year, they had four cases of Covid-19 and patients were immediately sent to NASREC Field Hospital.

“The three mothers and one teen who were admitted gave nothing but positive feedback on the treatment, care and dignity afforded them during their stay.”

Their wish for 2021 is that Nkosi’s Haven thrives and continues to help more people.

“We are thankful that we only had two coronavirus cases last year but none of them was seriously ill.“We have all survived,” said Johnson.

She added that they also have to handle a negative cash flow.

“We are overwhelmed with living from hand to mouth but appreciate those who support us both financially and with donations.

“People are wonderful and although 2020 was a lousy year for everyone, they still gave,” she said.

They are prepared for the new year and the children returning.

“We have requested that all returning residents bring a Covid-19 test result with them but some clinics don’t test if one has no symptoms so we have decided to put the village to level five lockdown from February 7 to 15 and just isolate everyone for that week.

“We are ready to take accountability to assist if there are any cases.

“The sickbay will do health checks daily, from a symptom and temperature point of view. “Any residents showing symptoms will be taken for testing and if found positive will be taken to the NASREC Field Hospital facility.

“It is going to be a very testing time for us but we will manage,” Johnson said.
