Taking the business to greater heights

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint-hearted. It is all about being passionate and working hard.

Born and raised in Alberton, chef, and entrepreneur Ronel de Beer (61) is on a mission to leave a mark in growing businesses.

“I own two tuck shops, at Hoërskool President High School and Alberview Primary School. “It has been tough this year because of the pandemic. After the country went into lockdown, we had to close and adhere to the rules. “We had to remove some stock from the shelves because it would have completely expired. We gave some of it to the less fortunate,” she said.

The financial strain didn’t, however, stop her from continuing her passion.

Being well known for her business experience, Ronel was told by a friend a coffee shop is looking for a manager.

“I phoned Tulip Café for the position and, well, after all the processes, I was appointed manager. It was quite exciting because I have never worked at a coffee shop before. We have been in operation from October 1.

“I thank them for believing in my ability to become a leader to Tulip Café, and I will forever be grateful. “Tulip Café has been good to me and I am proud to be part of the team that put all in the effort,” said Ronel.

She explained that even though it is just a temporary position, she has been enjoying the experience at the restaurant.

“This position has taught me to be grateful. The people that I am working with are amazing.”

She admitted that business has its ups and downs, but she stays positive.  She also aims to instill her skill in the younger generation to fulfill the position that she was given.

“I am a firm believer that some positions we are given in life should be given to the youth. They are fresh, energetic, and go-getters. I am glad to serve Tulip Café with the youth.

The owner of Tulip Café, Hans Serfontein, said they opened the restaurant at the beginning of October and the appointment of Ronel as manager was a great decision.

“We are still new in this market and Ronel and the team have been working hard to get this restaurant going. We trust it will reach its peak. Hopefully, soon we will have branches in different areas,” he said.

Tulip Café operates from Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. Pay them a visit at Tulip Garden Centre, 243 Rifle Range Road.
