WATCH: Netcare Clinton Hospital – A new way to fight the fear of going to theatre

While the vehicles were unveiled in the pediatric oncology unit, the cars will be used for children across the hospital.

To help overcome the fear experienced by children on their way to theatre, the Netcare Clinton Hospital introduced a new transport method on September 28.

The hospital boasts four new small cars that the patients themselves can drive through the halls to their appointment at the theatre.

These cars were donated by Superhero Cancer Kids, who worked with four independent companies to sponsor the cars.

They came in contact with the resident doctor in the pediatric oncology unit, Dr Tanya Schickerling, who explained the situation within the hospital.

According to Dawn Brits from Superhero Cancer Kids, they donated the cars due to their passion for helping children who are struggling with cancer and to ensure that the memories of what these children had to face never gets forgotten.

While the vehicles were unveiled in the pediatric oncology unit, the cars will be used for children across the hospital.

“It was so wonderful,” said Mercia Mokoena, the head nurse of the pediatric oncology unit.

Hospital manager Tendai Makwabarara said: “This will help lessen the fear felt by children on their way to theatre, and as evidenced by the children taking their first ride on the unveiling day.

“The dread was replaced by an air of excitement. The children couldn’t wait for their appointment to arrive so that they could drive the cars. “This goes a long way in helping them with the healing process, We appreciate the donation of the vehicles and the difference it will make.”

Tendai indicated that this is another way to show people that amidst the ongoing pandemic there is still care and attention given to other areas of medicine within the hospital.
