WATCH: Up-and-coming Walkerville artist follows her passion for music

Charlotte Boardman (37), affectionately known as Charlie B, has the world at her feet and is determined to reach more people with her music.

Charlotte Boardman (37), affectionately known as Charlie B, has the world at her feet and is determined to reach more people with her music.

The Walkerville musician and DJ has had a notable performance at the 2019 Alberton Day event.

She is a multifaceted artist who excels in all genres, but is mostly exceptional in country and rock music, delivering them both in English and Afrikaans. After taking a long break from music, she completed her cover Extended Play titled Charlie B 2020 in the beginning of the year.

Like many artists, Boardman started singing at a tender age, but she then stopped for a while. She later travelled to the United Kingdom and upon returning, met the love of her life who motivated her to venture more into music.

“I once went to a karaoke bar with my partner and there I met my mentor Tommy Gloss who got me into singing competitions like Onesto back in 2019. He later arranged for me to share a stage with Joe Black and Dirk van der Westhuisen. Well, once again I did not reach my dream but knew I was not going to quit,” she said.

Big opportunity

At age 21, she entered the very first Idols South Africa and made it to the top 100; unfortunately, she did not complete that cycle.

“I started singing at a very young age and enjoyed it so much that I eventually entered the first-ever South African Idols. But due to unforeseen incidents, I did not continue and lost my flair for the music,” said Boardman.

She is currently getting back on her feet and recovering from the impact of the national lockdown. While many other artists were confined to staying at home, Boardman was mostly busy with live Facebook shows and preparing to get back in the swing of things.

She strongly commended her mentor and said: “Tommy Gloss gave me a wonderful opportunity to sing on a big stage alongside people like Joe Black and Dirk van der Westhuisen. This was a great step in my career and it made me realise that music is what I want to do for a living.”

She is currently working on her new album that will hopefully feature original songs and is set to be released in 2021.
