47-year-old driver arrested for clocking 204km/h

One of the drivers alleged that he was taking his friend to the nearest hospital after he noticed symptoms of Covid-19.

Between August 22 and 23, EMPD speed law enforcement unit officers arrested three motorists on regulated 120km/h zones for non-compliance with speed limits.

These arrests took place in the Alberton and Bedfordview areas.

On August 22 at 10.30 am on the N12 east between Reading Interchange and Voortrekker off-ramp, a 34-year-old male driver with his nine-year-old as the passenger, driving a grey Golf GTI, was stopped and handcuffed for clocking 168km/h.

The driver claimed he was rushing to get a cake since it was his son’s birthday.

At 11.25 am on the same stretch of highway, a 23-year-old female driver, in a silver BMW 1, registered 174km/h, and said she was late for an appointment with a dentist.

Both motorists were escorted to Alberton Police Station.

On August 23 in Senderwood, Bedfordview, on the N3 north between Gillooly’s Interchange and Linksfield off-ramp, the squad nabbed a 47-year-old male driver of a blue BMW M5 for driving at 204km/h.

The Chinese national from Mpumalanga, who was with a male passenger, alleged he was taking his friend to the nearest hospital after he noticed symptoms of Covid-19.

The driver was taken to Bedfordview Police Station and the passenger, who was interviewed by officers onsite, denied being infected.

All three suspects were charged with reckless and negligent driving and will appear in the Palm Ridge and Germiston magistrate’s courts soon.
