WATCH: Mnandi Bus runners help underprivileged recyclers

The Mnandi Bus runners group donated food and basic Covid-19 prevention supplies to recyclers after seeing their settlement next to the highway.

The Mnandi Bus runners group donated food and Covid-19 prevention essentials to the informal settlement of recyclers just off the R59 just outside of Alberton on May 31.

According to Sbusiso Mlangeni, one of the members of the group, he noticed the settlement on his way to work and decided to stop and ask them about the settlement. He found out that they rely on waste recycling to make their living. Taking the situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic into account he decided to assist the settlement with donations.

“So I drafted a flyer video and started raising funds to buy food and masks,” said Sbusiso.  “Runners played a big role in contributing to this initiative and we managed to help them.”

Sbusiso was joined on the day by Bonga Mabaso and Makoma Moila from the Mnandi Bus group. The group donated a food hamper to each of the residents of the settlement and gave them two washable masks each.

The settlement was also given two 5l bottles of sanitiser, one bottle of washing soap and four bags of potatoes.
As part of the donation the group spent time raising awareness surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

The group explained to the recyclers how the virus is spread and the symptoms related to the virus. The residents of the settlement were also screened.

Tshepo Ramoabi, a resident at the informal settlement, thanked the group for the contributions of the Mnandi Bus runners.
The running group has called upon the government to help the people across the city who are making a living off recycling.
