Learners help other learners by donating masks

Their aim is to distribute the masks in schools where the need is the greatest. They have identified Greyville Primary School in Lenasia as the school they would like to support.

The coronavirus has taken the world by storm. In South Africa, every effort is being made to flatten the curve and to delay the peak in our infection rate.

One of the measures implemented by government in its attempt to get all South Africans on board to fight the spread of the virus has been to make the wearing of masks compulsory at school. However, many children can’t afford this.

St Martin’s One-by-One outreach committee has decided to step in and help. The One-by-One Face Mask Project is the brainchild of Aaminah Moosajee and Isra Hoosen, both Grade 11 learners at St Martin’s School and One-by-One committee chairpersons.

They have initiated a mask project to provide masks to schoolchildren who are less fortunate and have partnered with a national relief organisation who will make the masks for them.

The Islamic Medical Association (IMASA) has been running a successful mask campaign of their own, distributing reusable fabric masks in disadvantaged communities.

“What we need from our friends, teachers, parents and families is to donate money via EFT into the school’s bank account towards the cost of providing masks,” said Aaminah and Isra.

Their aim is to distribute the masks in schools where the need is the greatest. They have identified Greyville Primary School in Lenasia as the school they would like to support.

“The school is delighted and would love to be recipients of our masks. There are 1 500 learners in the school, and we wish to produce two masks for each learner, one to wear while the other is washed and dried. “We will ensure we distribute masks of high quality, made from two cotton layers with a vilene filter in the middle. The masks are reusable and washable.

“There is no doubt that as we grapple the coronavirus pandemic, we must ensure our safety and the safety of others. This extends beyond our families and loved ones. “We are, as a country, in it together, and together we can beat this.
“Please donate to this worthy project and help us to save lives.”
