Miss South Africa, Alberton’s own Sasha-Lee Olivier joined Gauteng Health Department officials at the Sebokeng Zone 17 clinic to celebrate International Nurses Day on May 12.
The day was held on the 200th birthday of the woman who pioneered modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. The main purpose and focus of the day was to applaud the sterling work being done by members of the frontline healthcare workers who are tirelessly giving of their service during this time of Covid-19.
Nursing staff who care for patients diagnosed with the coronavirus, and who are in need of special care, were honoured for their dedication and professionalism as they selflessly donned their personal protective equipment, and nursed highly infectious patients.
Sasha-Lee said their bravery needed to be acknowledged.
“We owe them a huge debt of gratitude. Nurses and frontline healthcare workers, please know that we are appreciative of everything you are doing for the sick in our society during this pandemic. From all of us South Africans, thank you.”
The Gauteng Health MEC, Dr Bandile Masuku, said: “The World Health Organisation has declared 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
This declaration reminds us all about the importance of nurses in healthcare.” He added: “I truly salute you, now and always.”
