Councillors share their thoughts on Covid-19

Councillors showing concerns regarding stubborn residents in the fight against coronavirus.

The COURIER took the liberty to ask two councillors to share their thoughts on the Covid-19 pandemic and this what they had to say.

Councillor Sipho Zungu

Speaking with the COURIER he said the country is fighting with a common threat which is Covid-19 and therefore everyone needs to be vigilant.

“It is also a call for responsibility and solidarity as people unite. As we fight the virus, we cannot let the fear go viral.

“Together we can still change the course of this pandemic, but that means addressing it. The best science tells us if countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace and mobilise their people in the response, we can go a long way in mitigating transmission,” said Zungu.

He stressed that some people are not taking this seriously and that ignorance may backfire.

“I kindly call upon everyone of our residents to step up and scale up their efforts now. Since this is the crisis that affects all of us, we must all play our part,” explained Zungu.

He encourages residents of ward 122 to try and comply with what has been put in place by the president to avoid the spread of the virus.

“We must show solidarity with the most vulnerable, the elderly, sick, and those without reliable health care. I hope this will help to change our mindset concerning this pandemic,” said Zungu.

Councillor Mangaliso Ngwenya

Councillor Ngwenya is content with the residents of Naturena who are obeying lockdown instructions.

He said ever since the lockdown started, the residents have been complying and that makes him proud as a councillor.

“I’m happy and that there are residents who love their lives and think of others’ lives in times like these. I wish we can keep it like this in Naturena until the lockdown is over,” said Ngwenya.

However, he expressed his concern about Freedom Park, explaining that residents there are not taking this seriously.

“I just want to plead with them to adhere to the rules for their own life sake. Let us not wait until this epidemic infects one of us from our families or neighbours, prevention is much better than cure,” said Ngwenya.
