Spend some time with your pets

APN still needs the help of the community.

Animal Protection Network (APN) is a part of a list of essential services and they will still operate during South Africa’s lockdown.

“We are busy obtaining the necessary documents and proof of identification, but yes, we will be working during this time as a lot of animals depend on us,” said one of APN’s executives Zuerina Venter.

APN is an animal welfare group that is concerned with the health, safety and psychological wellness of animals.

According to Venter, they will not only take care of animals already in their care but they will also be looking out for the homeless dogs.

Take care of your pets

Venter urged pet owners to look after their dogs during the lockdown.

“We have received a number of complaints over the last few weeks about dogs roaming the streets.

“During the lockdown, take the time to create a safe haven for your pets by closing all holes and checking your fence.

“Dog proof your home and yard and make sure to keep your pets safe,” she said.

According to her, they will be on standby daily to assist the community.

“Also, make sure that your dog wears a collar with a name and contact number or even have your dog microchipped.

“Collars with identification are your pets’ fastest ticket back to you should they become lost.”

How to keep your pets busy during the coronavirus lockdown

The current restrictions, such as physical distancing and lockdown, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has an impact on both pets and their owners.

“This can be an anxious time for everyone as the daily routines of your pet as well as yours have changed. You are at home and not at work. Your dog, who was used to go for walks, now has to stay at home with you,” said Venter.

Venter emphasised that it is now time to spend time with your pets.

“You can now give them your full attention and love. Make time to play with your pet and also use this opportunity to teach your pet new things.

“There are also a lot of other activities available on the internet about what you can do with your pets inside and outside. I think this is a time to think creatively,” she said.

APN’s immediate needs

“Due to people panic buying, we get many cases where people cannot find any dog or cat food available at shops.

“There are also a lot of people, including the elderly, who are unable to go to the shops to buy food.

“So if there are any volunteers who can donate any dog or cat food, it would help those in need.

“We need to stand together now more than ever,” she said.

Financial donations are also welcomed and can be paid into the organisation’s FNB bank account, with account number 626 9398 8770.

“Kindly email proof of payment to info@animalprotection.co.za to enable us to thank you personally and to correctly allocate the donations,” Venter said.
