No power at South Rand Recreation Centre

Various community sporting clubs and organisations make use of the centre each week and have had to do so without electricity.

South Rand Recreation Centre in South Hills has been without power for more than two months now and its tenants are struggling to perform their normal duties.

Various community sporting clubs and organisations make use of the centre each week and have had to do so without electricity.

Lyle Fortoen, manager of South Hills Boxing, said the City of Johannesburg is not supporting them in sporting initiatives and in building the community and no one has come forward to help them.

“Numerous service calls have been logged to the City of Johannesburg including the ward councillor, Faeeza Chame, however, the issue has yet to be resolved. I have informed the South Rand Management team Nonthlanthla Maboe that the children attending weekly training sessions at the centre have been training in the dark. I can also confirm that restrooms in the centre are stained with faeces and that the children are unable to make use of these facilities as it proposes a health risk to the community.

“The community would like to urge the City of Johannesburg to urgently resolve the issue so that the community can make use of the centre and to enable organisations to provide much-needed services within a safe and hygienic environment to the community. We are passionate about our community, through sport and boxing that is the only avenue to achieve this objective by keeping our kids off the streets,” explained Fortoen.

Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame said she is aware of the situation at the centre and she too is trying to get answers.

“City Power said they have done their part and City of Johannesburg needs to do their part as well. I contacted MMC for Community Development, Margaret Arnolds, about this; I haven’t had any positive response. I also held my meeting in the dark here,” she said.

COURIER sent messages about this matter to MMC for Community Development, Margaret Arnolds, and we haven’t had any response so far. When we called her she said an oversight needs to be done first and she will come back to us.
