Sassa beneficiaries to review their grants

Beneficiaries suspended for failing to review their social grants.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) beneficiaries who did not receive their grants in February are requested to visit their nearest branch.

The Social Assistance Regulation/Act compels a social grant beneficiary to inform the agency of any changes in their general or personal, medical and financial circumstances, hence Sassa conducts reviews on social grants.

“Notification letters were sent to beneficiaries on May 1, 2019, requesting them to visit their nearest local offices to review their social grants,” said Sassa Gauteng spokesperson Nandi Mosia.

“Failure of beneficiaries to comply with the request to review within 90 days resulted in the grant being suspended as per the date stated in the letter, informing the beneficiary that they are due for review.

“Beneficiaries will have to reapply before their social grants can be reinstated.

“A review is an effective measure to obtain current and updated information regarding a beneficiary’s circumstances,” said Mosia.

Beneficiaries must bring the following documentation along to complete the review process:

• Bar-coded identity document of yourself and spouse.

• Proof of marital status (marriage certificate, divorce certificate or death certificate).

• If there has been a change since your last application or review, investments, fixed deposits, last three months’ bank statements on all bank accounts held, completed employers’ certificate in terms of current employment or discharge.

• Child or children’s birth certificate/s in respect of a child support grant or care dependence.

• Court order or extension order in respect of foster care grant.

• Proof of address (electricity or telephone account letter from landlord, chief or councillor), rates certificate of property owned but not occupied by yourself and school report or letter if the child is school going of age.

Mosia concluded by stating that if there are any changes to a person’s and or spouse’s general, medical or financial circumstances, including that of the child for whom the beneficiaries receive a social grant, they must bring along the relevant documentary proof.
