WATCH: Gauteng residents urged to use water sparingly

The tunnel is said to be shut for inspection and maintenance “where necessary”, according to the department's spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.

GAUTENG consumers are urged to cut back on their water usage due to a two-month planned shutdown of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel system, according to the Water and Sanitation Department.

The tunnel is said to be shut for inspection and maintenance “where necessary”, according to the department’s spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.

Ratau commented, “This is something that has to happen after so many years, between seven to 10 years. It has to be looked into so that we know and do not get caught out if anything goes wrong.”

The department said while water supply will not be interrupted, it is important that residents use water sparingly.

Ratau said they have taken precautionary measures that will ensure that the amount of water needed for the two months have come through.
