Service providers to remediate Wemmerpan Dam soon

Manager of communications and marketing at Joburg Water Isaac Dhludhlu said there has been progress and work will start on the first week of September.

FISH in Wemmerpan Dam are dying because of raw sewage spillage that has been contaminating the water for some time now.

On July 31, the COURIER reported the spillage and tried to contact the relevant authorities to urgently intervene in this matter.

Almost two months later, there seems to be nothing happening or minimal action taken.

Liz Venter, who works near the dam, said the fish are dying and no one is helping.

“We haven’t had any assistance pertaining to this matter. The fish are dying and the stench is unbearable. We cannot live like this, really,” she said.

Manager of communications and marketing at Joburg Water Isaac Dhludhlu said there has been progress and work will start in the first week of September.

“This is a specialised service that will need to be done by external service providers. Tests indeed showed that the channel is contaminated and quotations from service providers to remediate the dam have been received and are being assessed.

“We are looking at appointing a service provider by the end of this week to begin the work in the first week of September,” he said.

Dhludhlu promised to keep the COURIER posted once the work starts.
