GALLERY: Raising money for mental health symposium

Abbotts College Student Representative Council’s outreach at the Mental Health Awareness Symposium at South Rand Hospital.

AS many as one in six South Africans suffer from anxiety, depression or substance abuse. This does not include more serious conditions such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, according to statistics released by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag).

Southrand Hospital recently hosted a mental health symposium, inviting the most recognised dignitaries in the field, including Prof Sibisi, SANCA Youth Representatives, the Minister of Health and many more.

With Southrand being a state-owned hospital, funds to make the event a success were limited.

The Student Representative Council of Abbotts College Johannesburg South decided to gather learners together and ask them for donations. A month later they raised over R1 000 for the hospital.

The hospital invited The Student Representative Council of Abbotts College to attend the event, who had the opportunity to see first-hand the fire and passion that burns within the hearts of South Africa’s healthcare providers, in order to transform the care of their patients.
