WATCH: Walking Tall organisations in Southern Suburbs

Walking Tall with Pride is an initiative built from an idea to provide destitute people with a hot meal once a week and some life essentials, such as clothing and groceries.

SCORES of needy people benefited from the partnership of a local organisation and businesses at Southern Suburbs Sport and Recreation Centre on July 10.

Walking Tall with Pride partnered with Huawei Connect and Green Fibre Africa from Midrand to feed over 200 needy people.

After a hot meal, each person received two loaves of bread, 1 litre of milk and a tin of fish.

Businessmen Kuben Katiah and Greg Peel said they heard through a mutual friend about Walking Tall with Pride and what they do for the community of the South. They were so interested to help that they provided 200 packets of maize meal (12.5kg), 1 500 cans of baked beans and fish, 500 loaves of bread, milk and spaghetti.

“We are planning on doing this often and we are targeting different areas here in Johannesburg and the whole of South Africa. Anyone who wants to partner with us to feed these less fortunate people is welcome to join us,” explained Katiah.

The organisation endeavours to encourage these people by assisting them to take pride in their environment and also assist them with work.

This is a registered NGO and all money or time donated will be used for its main objective. The feeding scheme takes place at the Southern Suburbs Sport and Recreation Centre between 12 noon and 1pm every Wednesday.

The team behind Walking Tall with Pride comprises Jeff and Marie Ellis, Nick and Janice Lourens and Anton Gilmore.

While each has their own life story and journey of gratitude, the common ground for all is the ability to give back.

Through both their individual and collective networks, they look to bring some joy into the lives of those who have very little.

Walking Tall with Pride represents not only pride and dignity, which they look to instil in each of the beneficiaries’ lives, but a sense of worth, belonging and hope for a better tomorrow.
