Long awaited traffic lights being erected

Owner of SMK Security Distributors, Shirley De Klerk, said she is delighted the traffic lights are being erected.

BUSINESS owners and motorists who use Boundary/Orpen Road will be pleased to see traffic lights are being erected at the corner of Orpen and Letaba roads, Eastcliff by the entrance to the Tiago Shopping Centre.

Boundary/Orpen Road has been highlighted in the Comaro CHRONICLE over the past two years for being notorious for motorists ignoring the 60km/h speed limit.

There have been quite a few minor accidents as well as a couple of more serious motor vehicle accidents. One claimed a woman’s life on April 5 this year after she was hit by a motorist while she was crossing the road to her place of work, SMK Security Distributors.

Owner of the business Shirley De Klerk said she is delighted the traffic lights are being erected.

“Hopefully these will assist greatly in slowing down the speed motorists drive as well as giving a break in the traffic flow at busy times of the day. I’m still hoping another set of traffic lights will go up at the corner of Boundary and Satara roads by the doctors’ rooms. This is a terrible intersection to try and get across.”

Dr Boscia, who is a doctor at the mentioned doctors’ rooms, was interviewed in a previous article pertaining to speeding motorists and agrees with De Klerk.

“We have asked for calming measures previously and they were refused. Motorists who drive on Boundary Lane which runs into Orpen Road mostly speed well over the 60km/h limit.

“There have been other accidents at the intersection with Satara Road and motorists trying to drive out onto Boundary Lane put their lives at risk all the time. There’s a blind bend and motorists can’t see how fast other motorists are driving. We really need traffic lights here or traffic calming measures.”

Until the traffic lights are in working order, motorists are advised to drive with caution along Orpen Road.

“There is confusion at the moment with some motorists stopping and others driving straight through the intersection,” added De Klerk.
