Registered NPO helps Grade Two learners to read

VOLUNTEERS at WH Coetzer Primary School are helping Grade Two learners to read with the help of a registered NPO, The Link Literacy Project.

The Link Literacy Project has two programmes; literacy and numeracy. At the moment the former is being administered at the school twice a week under the tutelage of the centre manager, Carina Delport.

“We are currently based at WH Coetzer Primary School, The Hill from 9am to 11am on Mondays and Wednesdays. We started The Link Literacy Project in 2013, this is the sixth year. When we started, Standard Bank came on board to sponsor it that is why to date they send eight of their staff members to volunteer two hours of their time with the learners,” she said.

This is their 17th centre at WH Coetzer Primary School. They support the development of literacy in children for whom English is a second language and who attend low income schools in and around Johannesburg. The Link relies on volunteers to assist them as they read with learners one on one, or two on one.

At the moment they only have a few volunteers and would love to have more volunteers. No previous teaching experience is necessary, just a love for children and fluency in English. Most of their volunteers are woman who are able to spare a couple of hours a week, by starting work a little later or by using their lunch hour.

Carina said the people who are close to the school are ideal because it will be easier for them to get to the school however everyone is welcome as long as they love to teach children and they can get to the school on the stipulated times.
