St Martin’s learners conquer the X-Berg Challenge

“These learners of ours deserve enormous congratulations for rising up to a challenge that very few people their age can claim to have faced.”

CONGRATULATIONS to the group of St Martin’s High School learners who participated in the X-Berg Challenge that took place over the long weekend in March.

The team entered the trail run section of the challenge that begins at the Didima Resort, Cathedral Valley and ends at the Drak Brewery, Elmiradoir airfield, Champagne Valley, covering 67km in total.

The group of form three and form four boys and their teacher, Greg Carter, despite the mist and rain, completed the course. They learnt a tremendous amount about teamwork, GPS, navigating and decision making.

“The best moment of the entire race was when Amir Bhika, David Midgley and Enrique Lotter crossed the finish line utterly exhausted and when I asked them to go back and redo the final four kilometres to make sure Hansie Meyer didn’t finish alone. All three of them agreed to go back.

“These moments and many others tested our athletes’ endurance, willpower and teamwork. When times became tough and decisions had to be made, real character and grit were displayed,” said Greg Carter, St Martin’s English teacher.

“These learners of ours deserve enormous congratulations for rising up to a challenge that very few people their age can claim to have faced.”
