CARING TOGETHER: Grade 2 and 3 learners at Grace Trinity.

IN support of Lammie the elephant, who is living all alone at Johannesburg Zoo, Grace Trinity School for Girls hosted guest speaker Kathy Raffray from Ban Animal Trading, to chat to the girls about saving Lammie and how to be compassionate towards animals.

The learners heard from Kathy that Lammie spends her days in the only shady spot against her enclosure wall. She has no pool in which she can submerge herself and there are no boulders or tree trunks for scratching. More importantly, as a lone elephant, she has no social environment. At last count, approximately 270 000 people have signed online petitions to free Lammie.

The learners recited the Compassion Pledge in support of all animals and then Kathy told them the story of Lammie’s family and what has happened to them all over the years. Colouring in posters and writing letters to Lammie, the learners are asking for her to be set free to spend her remaining years in an elephant sanctuary.
