Scheduled physiotherapy session resulted in arm breaking at South Rand Hospital

A South Rand Hospital physiotherapist could find himself in hot water after he allegedly twisted a patient’s arm.

A SOUTH Rand Hospital physiotherapist could find himself in hot water after he allegedly twisted a patient’s arm.

Kaliyani Naidoo said she went to the hospital on January 15 to attend a physiotherapy session as she is suffering from undisclosed sickness.

She told the COURIER on January 11 she went to see the Head of Physiotherapist and was scheduled to attend a back class on the January 15 and he was going to be present at the back class.

“After I was done with back class, A junior physiotherapists was asked to write me a sick note. While she was busy with that I kept myself occupied by reading two pieces of paper next to me with exercises and she asked what I was doing with the papers. She grabbed it out of my hands and said I need to ask for her permission,” said Naidoo.

The junior physiotherapist started chasing repeatedly saying “ GET OUT” quite a few times.

Naidoo says she carried asking the junior physio what was the problem and she still continued.

Naidoo said the Head of Physio left his patient and came to her running. He grabbed her roughly and manhandled her which resulted in her arm getting twisted. She claims the physiotherapist told when he is done with her she will never forget him. She did however go to his senior to report the incident, and during that meeting with this senior he started laughing and labelled her.

“Now I have to attend my sessions at Baragwanath Hospital because I’m being threatened at South Rand. My character has been defamed,” she added.

She depends on her neighbours and friends when it comes to house chores due to her arm.

Naidoo has opened a case of assault but said no one has been subpoenaed yet. Naidoo is still going through so much of pain due to the fact that she can’t go to South Rand and awaiting a referral letter to go to Baragwanath Hospital.

South Rand Hospital spokesperson Phafudi Molapo said “The client did lodge a complaint internally and the complaint was investigated but could not be confirmed. She was also called for a redress meeting which took place on February 6.” To which she was not satisfied with the outcome due to the fact that the accused did not attend to apologize and asked the other staff members on his behalf. Naidoo also confirmed that she did ask for a letter of apology from the physiotherapist that assaulted her and was told that the apology was sent to the Police and the Prosecutor.

Moffatview SAPS confirmed to the COURIER a case was opened, but the docket was taken to the public prosecutor for a decision.

Naidoo believes that something should have been done internally after receiving her complaint and the person involved in assaulting her is still in the employ of the hospital.
