CoJ saddened by death of JMPD officer and security guard

The MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun urges residents who may have information about any of these crimes to come forward and share this information with the police.

THE City of Johannesburg is saddened by the death of two of its employees killed in separate incidents on February 24.

An off-duty Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer Dikosha Josias Manyama was killed in a robbery in Naturena.

In another incident, security guard Eric Makgathokga was killed in Fleurhof, Roodepoort while he was on duty.

Manyama was in a place of entertainment near his house with friends when four suspects entered the premises and sporadically shot at the patrons, injuring four and killing two.

The suspects made way with an undisclosed amount of money from the tavern and the owners of the adjacent shop claim R7 000 was taken by the robbers.

Manyama, who has served in the City since 1989, served in Region D when he came to his untimely death.

In a separate incident, on-duty security guard Eric Makgathokga was shot and killed by an unknown number of suspects who forcefully entered the Fleurhof Empowerment Zone building. They took five solar panel geysers among other valuables.

Makgathokga officially joined the City as an employee early in 2018 during the insourcing drive that was led by the Department of Public Safety.

MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun said, “We are aggrieved by the death of Manyama and security guard Makgathokga. As a department we are committed to assisting the investigating officers to ensure that the culprits are arrested and face the full might of the law.

“The executive mayor Clr Herman Mashaba and I will be visiting the families of the deceased officer and security guard to pay our respect and offer assistance to the families during this difficult time. Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends and colleagues of the two employees of the City.”

The MMC also urged residents who may have information about any of these crimes to come forward and share this information with the police.

The Department of Public Safety will be honouring their fallen colleagues with a memorial service later on in the week.
