Illegal dumping eyesore on Kliprivier

The wetland close to the dumping site is being threatened by the illegal dumping about 400m from the intersection of Swartkoppies and Klipriver roads.

SEVERAL residents from Alberton have raised a concern about the illegal dumping site on Kliprivier Road, about 400m from the intersection of Kliprivier and Swartkoppies roads.

The dumping site seems to be used by all kinds of people, with people dumping a huge variety of waste at the site. A lot of building rubble also seems to be dropped off at the site.

At the time of writing this article, there was still no barrier to prevent people from dumping at this zone other than the bylaws warning sign warning people against dumping rubbish on the site.

The Alberton’s official place for disposing of waste is situated at the Heidelberg Road Transfer Station.

Residents of Alberton have raised a concern that the site is growing with nothing seemingly being done to stop the illegal dumping on the site.

The effect on the environment, as well as the aesthetics of the area, needs to be considered. There are no barriers to prevent dumping.

Close to the illegal dumping site, is an area of wetland. Wetlands are vital for the ecosystem as an environment for many birds and animals as well as water filtering in the area. Should this dumping area become larger, the wetland area will be cannibalised.

Despite being on the Alberton side of Swartkoppies Road, the area falls under the Johannesburg metro, a fact confirmed by councillor Malcolm Maifala and EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

A comment about what is being done to stop this illegal dumping was requested from the relevant authorities from Johannesburg. At the time of going to print no comment was given to the CHRONICLE.

The CHRONICLE will continue to follow up on this and will release information about what is being done to prevent the illegal dumping.
