Protecting a crime scene

“Make sure the crime scene is sectioned off, by either using ribbon or string to stop anyone crossing into the area where evidence could be disturbed.”

EIKENHOF Women’s Institute members enjoyed listening to guest speaker Linda Goodenough, from Fidelity ADT, at the meeting on October 10.

WI member Marje Lattimer opened the meeting with a prayer. Linda then shared the topic, how to react at a crime scene, what to do and not to do. She said it’s important to try and remember as much as possible about what took place.

“If you are first on a crime scene at home, press your panic alarm to alert your security company and if someone is injured tell them and they will automatically deploy an ambulance and the police to the scene.

“Make sure the crime scene is sectioned off, by either using ribbon or string to stop anyone crossing into the area where evidence could be disturbed.

“Alternatively, if you are out in a shopping centre and a crime is committed, dial 10111 if you are first there and keep spectators back as far as you are able to,” Linda added.

“If a person is injured, first get one of the witnesses or someone on the scene to go to the entrance of the centre in order to let EMS know where the injured person and crime scene is. If the injured person needs CPR, administer this until the paramedics arrive and can take over from you.

“Try and keep witnesses on the scene so they can give their statement to the police once they arrive, although discourage them from discussing what happened as they may get their information mixed up,” said Linda.

The ladies found the talk interesting and informative, finishing off with a quiz where objects were placed on a table and they had to write down as many of them as they could remember. Margaret Whitley was the winner and received a prize. Tea and refreshments followed. The next meeting will take place on November 14 at 9.30am at St Andrew’s Church hall, Burger Street, Suideroord.
