South’s innovators on a mission

THREE learners from Glenvista High School are among 27 learners from all nine provinces who are finalists of the Junior Innovators competition sponsored by Investec.

Taheed Ahmed, Reshay Harrinarain and Aarif Soobrayan’s ideas were chosen among the finalists in the competition, a great accomplishment for the learners and the school.

Investec CSI has partnered with Junior Achievement South Africa (JASA) in an Entrepreneurship Academy Programme. This initiative stimulates an entrepreneurial mindset and life skills among learners. Learners who participated in the academy and junior achievement enterprise programmes eagerly submitted their application forms that detailed their business ideas. The idea had to be socially innovative and address a need within society.

The school’s acting principal, Mxolisi Mkotwane, congratulated the trio.

He said, “Despite every negativity that surrounded school learners lately, these three learners are our shining examples. They are a long way ahead of them to prove not only to themselves but to the world they are the best.”

JASA programmes coordinator Elias Sebola said they make sure the learners are equipped with entrepreneurial skills, financial literacy and job readiness.

“All these learners research their product and they will have companies where they will have to sell the product. It will be a robust and challenging presentation to the judges. They will be working from 8am to 8pm for a week to hone their final presentations.

“Investec will be paying for everything. The learners will also have the opportunity to visit the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS),” he said.

The learners will be participating in the competition during school holidays from October 1 to 5 and they will be accommodated at Capital Empire Hotel in Sandton.
