UPDATE: Security officer shot in head, recovering at home

The officer has left the hospital and is recovering at home, under close supervision.

AN unsuspecting response officer from Sentinel Security’s is still in Netcare Union Hospital’s intensive care unit after he was ambushed and shot in the head by several armed suspects.

The officer, who is to remain anonymous, was doing a routine patrol at around 2am on August 19 at the Total fuel station near Alrode, to make sure everyone was safe.

Suddenly, the officer was ambushed by eight to 10 armed suspects. He was shot once in the head at close range before the armed robbery was foiled and the suspects fled.

“The officer has made a miraculous recovery and has been released from hospital on August 22,” said Loris Barbera on behalf of Sentinel Security.

“He is under close supervision and will return to hospital in a few days for extra examinations, to confirm his health status before he can go back to work.”

“Sentinel Security would like to thank all clients, friends and colleagues for the emails, texts and calls to follow up on the officer. He is well-known to the community for his professionalism towards fighting crime. Sentinel management is looking forward to having him back in action soon,” Loris added.

The investigation continues and Sentinel together with SAPS is currently following up on leads to apprehend the suspects. Sentinel Security also wants to thank the National Paramedical Services as well as Brackendowns SAPS for their quick response to the crime scene.

Anyone with further information must please contact the Brackendowns SAPS investigating officer on 011 617 5600.
