Gina says goodbye to charity group

“I will miss you all tremendously and cherish the memories we have made these years. May the Lord bless you all.” - Gina.

IT has been 29 years of charitable work for Gina Louro at St Patrick’s Mother Teresa Charity Group in La Rochelle and on August 16 she passed the baton to others to continue her work.

She said all this took a lot of dedication, hard work, patience, time, love, loyalty and honesty.

“The warm and cold rainy nights were worth it. The rewards and blessings received have been touching. I would like to thank our sponsors whose remarkable and unfailing generosity has allowed us to help the less fortunate in our community over the past 29 years. The spirit in which you have given so freely will never be forgotten and will be treasured in my heart for the rest of my life,” she said.

Every Tuesday the group starts at 5pm to feed the less fortunate in La Rochelle, Eloff Squatter Camps, Glenesk, Linmeyer, The Lighthouse, Bellavista and Turffontein. Fifty food parcels are given out every Tuesday morning to poor families who collect from the church hall and food parcels are being delivered to those who are disabled.

“I took on this project as there was a need for food for our poor people on the streets. We worked closely with Booysens SAPS (Warrant Officer Cornelius) and JMPD (Constable Baloyi). I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation to all the ladies who worked in the kitchen and evening volunteers who unselfishly gave their time and dedication for those less fortunate. Thank you very much all.

“We’ve made a great team, some memorable memories and great friendships. To Tess Schoeman who served as director, bookkeeper and dear friend, I hope you will enjoy a well-deserved retirement, thank you. To Lena Lourence, thank you very much for serving meals in the evening and taking over the books and admin work. What a blessing you’ve been to me, thank you. To Manny Costa and Porfilho who get up early on Mondays and Tuesdays to collect food from sponsors and suppliers. To Manny who drives the kombi around, thank you for your help.

“I will miss you all tremendously and cherish the memories we have made these years. May the Lord bless you all,” noted Gina.
