IT is almost a year now since the CHRONICLE wrote a compelling story of Southerner Marlon Harper (55), who was found by a kind-hearted stranger Brad Bennetts in Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal.
Then, destitute, disabled and epileptic, Marlon’s world was crumbling. Their chat (with Brad), which was started by Marlon talking about the beach buggy Brad was driving, revealed that both men were actually from the South of Johannesburg.
One thing led to another, and St Martin’s alumni took the matter into their own hands to help Marlon, who now lives in Freeway Recovery Centre, Cape Town.
St Martin’s alumni found out about Marlon when the CHRONICLE ran his story last year. He was a learner at St Martin’s School. Then a group of people, including Wendy Purdon, saw the post and took it upon themselves to help him. Wendy said Marlon is 11 months clean and sober.
“We are happy for him as he has made contact with his children and he is a grandpa now,” she said.
Wendy said they have organised someone to teach Marlon computer skills free of charge so he can continue with his life.
“We hope he finds something to do soon,” she noted.
Marlon spoke to the CHRONICLE, he said his family found him at the rehab at Jericho in the Free State through the help of St Martin’s alumni. He described the first meeting with his daughter, Rolene, as wonderful and a miracle.
“I was so happy and felt blessed to finally meet her. I remember her first words: ‘Ek is so bly om jou te vind’ (I’m so glad to have found you). That was the happiest day of my life. She is now married with three children. Her husband, Christiaan, is very supportive and I am glad I finally found my family.
“For now I live here at Freeway Recovery Centre in Cape Town. I am doing well and we are in constant contact with my daughter,” he said.
His epilepsy is under control, and he is also still in contact with Brad.
