In search of women of courage

You can help by nominating these women who are seldom acknowledged.

DURING this month all the women of Ward 23 who are an inspiration to the community will be celebrated.

Ward councillor Sarah Wissler explained: “Most times women are under-appreciated if at all, and of late women have had to endure so much societal pain. If it is not the endurance of spousal abuse, it is what results in emotional or physical death.

“Women have died with their greatness because they were too busy being brave and strong, that they forgot to put themselves first.

“There are so many stories dominating the news about women being abused. Although we cannot turn a blind eye to all that is happening, we need to start sharing stories that will motivate and uplift our women in society. This August I want to start celebrating women who are unheard of.

“I have started Virago Women’s Awards for Ward 23 which consists of these areas: Bassonia, Glenanda, Glenvista, Mulbarton, Liefde ‘n Vrede, Aspen, Rispark, Patlynn, Mayfield Park and Kibler Island.

“Virago means a strong, brave woman of great stature and courage who demonstrates exemplary and heroic qualities. I found this word to be a fitting word for this initiative.

“We are looking for women who stand out in whatever area of life that they are in, whether it be in their career, their businesses, or a mere community activist who takes care of the needs of people or animals. It can also be a woman who takes care of the children, the elderly or as broad as the environment. There are many qualities that women possess and we are on the lookout for those women who are undiscovered jewels,” she said.

You can help to nominate these women who are seldom acknowledged. You can find the nomination form on www.viragoawards.co.za  The closing date is Saturday, August 18.

The award ceremony, which is to be attended by invitation only, will take place on Wednesday, August 29.
