Police to monitor Reuven after spate of car break-ins

Gregory said he has on many occasions reminded the City Council to repair the broken boundary walls, and to replace the rusted barbwire, and replace the fused or broken street light bulbs to lighten up the parking area

LATELY, there has been a spate of break-ins of cars belonging to the residents of Reuven Retirement Complex.

A number of cars have been broken into and batteries, light fittings, a radiator and many valuables have been stolen. These break-ins are continuing without any interruption.

Benjamin Solomon, a resident at Reuven, said angry residents are up in arms and vented frustration at a meeting held at the Reuven Hall on July 19. The main speaker was Warrant Officer Gerhard Cornelius from the Crime Prevention Unit accompanied by members of the Social Crime Youth Desk, a subdivision of the Booysen Police Station.

“Cornelius said he will try to arrange regular mobile police patrol inside the complex, he said it is important that the owners report the break-ins to the police as soon as possible,” he said.

Gregory Mackett, manager of Reuven Retirement Complex, said when he reported this to the regional head of housing, he was told that the City Council is not responsible or liable for the security and safety of movable assets such as motor vehicles, etc.

“I have on many occasions reminded the City Council to repair the broken boundary walls, and to replace the rusted barbwire, and replace the fused or broken street light bulbs to lighten up the parking area. I have personally installed barbwire where there are openings or easy access to the premises,” explained Gregory.

Isak de Lange from housing was contacted several times and his phone rang unanswered.
