Montessori teaching course sponsorship for TLC pre-school teacher

The course is an eye opener to different skills Ellen will get to care for children.

A TEACHER at TLC Children’s Home pre-school, Ellen Ambraal, has received a full scholarship to study a year-long Montessori teaching course to advance her educational skills in caring for children.

The sponsorship comes from the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton which saw the potential in Ellen to advance her education for a better management of toddlers at the children’s home.

Coming from a complicated background all hope was not lost for Ellen as she believes people always have a second chance in life.

“I came to TLC when I was only 14 years old and Thea Jarvis has been fostering me since then. Over the years I have been helping around with different tasks at the nursery until I started teaching the toddlers,” she said.

Her foster sister Joanna Jones had urged her to take up the course but funding had been the stumbling block until she received the sponsorship.

“I have always liked working with children and it’s a passion that I’m glad to be strengthening with an adequate education. Without this sponsorship, I would be nowhere and I’m so grateful to my sponsors and TLC for letting me continue with my studies, as well as their continued encouragement,” she added.

Ellen began the course earlier this year with good marks for all the modules she has since completed.

“Sometimes balancing work and school can be challenging but it’s worth it and I believe at the end of the course I will be well enlightened on special skills required in teaching and taking care of children,” Ellen said.

The course, which is worth R25 000 per year, includes full stationery which is provided for by the school in North America and a tutor with whom Ellen corresponds with for her assignments and exams.
