WITH armed robbers who have been targeting petrol stations in Alberton and the surrounds it is important for drivers to keep themselves safe when filling their cars.
A robbery occurred at a petrol station on the corner of Michelle and Hennie Alberts Street on May 22 where three armed men robbed the Sasol station. The following day another robbery took place at Glenanda Caltex were four more suspects were involved. In both cases a similar silver Audi was reported, possibly indicating a link between the incident and a sign that more robberies could occur.
Captain Manara Ramotshela, the spokesperson of the Alberton Police Station, has warned motorists to be vigilant when going to petrol stations.
“If you see a car parked there or following you that looks suspicious, don’t stop,” said Ramotshela.
Linda Reeder, community development manager at Fidelity ADT, has also shared advice to help keep drivers safe.
“A petrol station is not the place to let your guard down,” said Reeder. “Stopping to refuel your car is definitely not the time to stop and make calls or check your phone for messages. It is an open invitation that says, ‘I have a cellphone if anybody is interested’.”
When filling your car, make sure all the doors are locked and your windows are closed. Open doors provide access for criminals to rob the vehicle or hijack it.
Always keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious and if you see something inform the SAPS or a local security company to come and assess the suspicious person.
“If you see something suspicious or believe someone is following you drive to the nearest police station,” said Ramothshela. “Alternatively, know your sector police patrol vehicles number so that you can call them immediately.”
