A gift of love for the abused on Mandela Day

The house, which is registered with social development, is expected to open its doors to the public in December during the 16 Days of Activism.

DA WARD 23 councillor Sarah Wissler dedicated her 67 minutes for Mandela to renovations and groundwork for a home she plans to open for the abused women and children in the community.

The house, which is registered with social development, is expected to open its doors to the public in December during the 16 Days of Activism.

“To commemorate Mandela Day, I chose to renovate my home for the project that I have neglected for so long due to my work constraints. Seeing as we are running out of time, we had to ensure everything is in place by the time we open it in December,” she said.

The house is expected to house 10 abuse survivors and their children.

“This was a gift to me by the Afrikaans church to help victims of abuse. This initiative will ensure victims can continue with their lives on a positive perspective regardless all that they went through in the past,” she added.

Wissler said renovation activities such as cementing, painting and woodwork at the house were far from over, hence the need to prioritise the project for Mandela Day.

“I would like to thank all the councillors who have assisted me to see to the fruition of this project, Ward 23 members, Frontline Plumbers, Comaro Paints, First Plumbing, and all who have donated building or painting equipment for the house,” she said.

Donations of furniture, toiletries and non-perishable food can help stock up the house prior to its opening.

Any members of the community willing to contribute towards the house for abused women and their children can consider donating some of the bigger appliances and furniture required, such as a gas stove, fridge, freezer, bunk beds, curtains, and spare or old tiles for the floors and walls.
