Recycling will save the day

Down the line (no firm or confirmed date) there will likely need to be fines for those who do not recycle.

INCREASED waste management costs are inevitable for Joburg residents if landfill sites across Gauteng fill up and taking part in recycling will help avert a crisis for the city and its residents, an official has said.

With only a few days left before recycling becomes mandatory and reports of the Robinson Deep slowly filling up to capacity, it is important to note that recycling will save the day.

“When Robinson Deep fills up, it is likely that we will need to export waste further away to a new site which may necessitate increasing costs (to cover increased transport costs). This is why the extra effort from everyone to recycle will help prevent any costs increases,” DA Ward 23 Councillor Sarah Wissler has said.

She said recycling remains critical for the environment, yet more importantly, it would help reduce the amount of waste going into landfill sites across the city.

“At the moment nothing will be done to those who will ignore the call to recycle but we are hoping everyone will voluntarily join in the project. However, down the line (no firm or confirmed date) there will likely need to be fines for those who do not recycle,” Wissler added.

Pikitup recently released some informative graphics of how and what residents should consider when recycling.

All recyclables are expected to go in the clear or blue recycling plastic bags that will be delivered to residents weekly.

The recycling bags will be put outside together with residents’ 20-litre bins on collection day and this will not be subjected to any cost implications other than getting a second bin and space for recyclables inside one’s home.

HOW TO: Informative graphics from Pikitup help residents know to differentiate material that needs to be recycled and that which doesn’t.
