Molo Africa project airborne

Molo Africa invited various high schools around Gauteng to participate in a competition to select top 20 finalists who will participate towards building a Sling 4 aeroplane during June/July 2018 school holidays.

MOLO Africa – Cape 2 Cairo is an initiative by two 16-year-old authors, motivational speakers and radio show co-host Megan Werner and Ntando Makwela. The purpose is to inspire young people throughout the Continent of Africa to dream big.

The project promotes aviation, education, entrepreneurship, innovation, tourism and literature.

Molo Africa invited various high schools around Gauteng to participate in a competition to select top 20 finalists who will participate towards building a Sling 4 aeroplane during June/July 2018 school holidays.

On June 9, Molo Africa held its selection day at Nova Pioneer Paulshof Campus.

The competition attracted 134 students from various schools around Gauteng including Nova Pioneer Ormonde Campus, Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation, Mandisa Shiceka, Rhodesfield Technical, Hoërskool Noordheuwel, Denel Technical Academy, Hoërskool Birchleigh and Willowmead Secondary.

It was a fun-filled day packed with experiential activities that challenged limited beliefs, instilling confidence, self-esteem, unleashing the student’s potential, team building and leadership development. The students connected with new friends and built a big family around Molo Africa initiative.

Adjudicators included engineers and an artisan from Denel Aeronautics Naadira Hassim, Zulaigha Ismail, Azhar Cassim, Major Ash Singh from South African Airforce and Sandy Mohale.

The judging process was conducted by independent judges Rooksana Modan, Abdool Manack, Victorine Fru, Pieter Crous and Angie Bhaga, to ensure that students with suitable skills, drive and passion, commitment and determination were selected to participate in the aeroplane build programme.

The top 20 finalists are Luke Jacobs, Lesego Ngoasheng, Merrit Tyson, Camron Eales, Marna Coetzer, Cayla Bland, Cherise Louw, Matthew van Rensburg, Sune Marx, Bromleg Moyo, Nomsa Mboneli, Stembile Myeni, Raynard Duffue, Ashleig Kelly, Abdull Khan, Mihle Kambula, Xolisa Dhlamini, Siphesihle Thusi, Resego Moroka, Venessa Daman, Psonane Dineoana and Norman Peterson.

Golden Tickets: Anees Dawood, Agnes Seemela, Lesedi Letanka, Ruby Moeketsi, Cara van Deventer and Lehandrie Burger.

Support Team: Joshau Huttcheson, Precious Bhebhe, Pearl Ngobeni, Jarred Henderson, Siyabula Mazameieia, Nalibongwe Mdudi, Kyle Drescher, Nhlawuleko Sithole, Celokuhle Ncayiyana, Prisca Luwana, Musa Mlanzi, Japhta Mofokeng, Khuliso Nalana, Ronan Vaz, Mynhardt Mans, Precious Monoketsi and Ntokozo Radebe.

The project commences on June 22 and will run until July 16. Students will be building the aeroplane at the Airplane Factory at Hangar 8, Tedderfield Airpark, 23 Nettleton Road, Eikenhof.
