WATCH VIDEOS: 408 vehicles impounded by JMPD

On Tuesday, June 26, executive mayor Herman Mashaba took members of the media on a walk-about showing them unroadworthy taxis impounded by the JMPD at the JMPDs offices at Wemmerpan.

THROUGH the BuyaMthetho Operation the City of Joburg impounded 70 taxis and 12 trucks between March 3 and June 11. Overall 408 vehicles have been impounded.

The mayor denied that the city was targeting only taxis and said their aim is to deal with unregistered and unlicensed vehicles. One of the taxis that was inspected by the mayor had torn seats and no registration plates. The mayor expressed his shock that an unroadworthy mini-bus like this was transporting about 20 learners.

Chief of Police David Themba said: “We dealt with an issue that has been raised by the society. They had an outcry about drivers of these vehicles that skip red traffic lights and do not obey road markings.

“Also, taxis that are in no state to carry commuters. The impoundment happened in terms of legislation. We are directed by Regulation 304, 305 and 320 of the Road Traffic Act and since the commencement of the impoundment of vehicles, there hasn’t been any complaint lodged against the JMPD. This shows that the JMPD is working hard.”
