OVER the weekend Liefde en Vrede residents organised and participated in a clean-up campaign where they picked up litter in different streets in their area.

The team also wrote a letter to fellow residents warning them against implications of illegal dumping or littering as they believe everyone has a right to an environment that is clean and not harmful to one’s health or well-being.

“In a quest to combat illegal dumping, please note that if you are seen illegally dumping garden refuse, domestic refuse, builders rubble or any kind of refuse in open spaces, vacant stands and sidewalks by your neighbours or any residents you will be reported and environmental health practitioners of this region may institute further legal action against you,” reads part of the letter.

Employers of casual workers, gardeners and garden services were also urged to take responsibility of their gardens or any other refuse material to ensure it is disposed of at approved garden sites.

KEEP IT CLEAN: Ward 23 Cllr Sarah Wissler chats to some of the residents during the clean-up campaign as they also presented their letter on illegal dumping to be distributed to fellow Liefde en Vrede residents.

DA Ward 23 councillor Sarah Wissler, who was also part of the team, said: “Littering is not a Pikitup function, theirs is rubbish removal. If you want your area clean, do as the others do, get involved and stop littering. Teach your children to be responsible and children, if your parents litter, you need to teach them.”

She urged other communities in her ward to prioritise cleanliness and organise similar initiatives where she would also participate and contribute necessary resources.
