Self-defence skills at Mondeor monthly domestic watch

Prevention is, however, always the best self-defence skill.

SEVERAL Mondeor residents recently acquired self-defence skills at their monthly domestic watch gathering held at Sasol garage on the corner of Swartgoud and Columbine.

The self-defence lesson was presented by Fidelity ADT’s Community Development Manager, Linda Reeder.

She said self-defence moves were a key element as many of the domestic staff members in the area were vulnerable to attacks from criminals while they walk alone to get to and from work.

Reeder demonstrated different skills on how to respond when one is being attacked either from the front, back or from the side.

Fidelity ADT’s community development manager, Linda Reeder, demonstrates some self-defence moves at the recent Domestic Watch meeting in Mondeor.

She said the purpose of self-defence would help a victim know what to do if violence is unavoidable.

Reeder, however, added that the self-defence moves should never be used whenever weapons are involved.

“In the instance where a weapon is used, we recommend just giving the criminal what they want and getting out of there as fast as possible.”

She said prevention was always the best self-defence skill.

“Most important is to follow general safety tips by being aware of your surroundings and walking in well-lit areas if possible. Keep valuables hidden and try and vary your routes,” Reeder added.

“Apart from avoiding confrontation, if you can diffuse a situation by talking someone down and getting away, that is a much better solution.”
