HARVEST Christian School has over the years been educating and motivating learners to care for the less privileged through a programme of dedicated learners known as The Royal Servants.
The school’s Royal Servants comprises of learners from different grades who go out to serve the community every Friday.
Recently, the Royal Servants had a successful outreach to Kekana Gardens Township near Hammanskraal where learners painted the church of Pastor Frans Khoza then they planted a huge vegetable garden, as well as a rose garden for the community.
The Servants also did the sinners prayer with 210 people, as well as ministering at an old age home, orphanage, crèches, police station, fire brigade, taxi ranks. They also did door-to-door evangelism in Kekana Village.
According to the school’s spokesperson, Taryn Clarke, getting children involved in community work at a younger stage was exciting.
“We have learned that each one of us can make a difference and bring hope in our communities, people are desperate for Jesus everywhere,” she said.
“Our aim is to minister in the local community by means of encouragement and by spreading the Gospel. The children love the Fridays that they get to go out and encourage and minister to these elderly folk.”
History of Royal Servants
The Royal Servants were started in 1998 by Sharon Bennet and Ella Jansen van Vuuren. The idea was to expose learners to people who are less privileged and to encourage and serve them. The first Royal Servants was a small, very disciplined and a well-trained group of learners.
Presently, the school serves several people within the community through their Royal Servants programme. Learners volunteer to become members of the Royal Servants. The Royal Servants group visits orphanages, old age homes and also does mission work. This also equips learners to become unselfish and teaches them to serve others.
The Royal Servants group currently comprises 55 learners who are divided into four phases: sowers, reapers, Malabeth Abadim and the leader group.
To register as a sower a person must learn certain memory verses, attend an interview and attend an orientation course. It is also compulsory to wear the Royal Servant T-shirt during outreaches. The members receive a scroll for three years faithful service.
The sowers group has one sleepover per year, reapers has two sleepovers away and Malabeth Abadim goes on an outreach tour every year.
