BOOYSENS SAPS and MoffatView SAPS would like to warn the public about trending crimes which occur in the same fashion or the same places, leaving people victims of crime more and more.
Be warned:
1. Do not park your vehicle outside your gate. A lot of residents lose their vehicles from this tendency.
2. Do not let strangers onto your property, whether they claim to be coming from City Power, JHB Water or the Environmental Health that they have been sent by a local ward councillor. People have scammed residents using Clr Rashieda Landis’s and Clr Faeeza Chame’s names. Residents are encouraged to ask for identification first and then make a call to confirm with the institution from where the people claim to be coming, by dialling a number from the Yellow Pages or the website, not the one that is provided by the same people.
3. Do not allow people to offer you help at the ATM. Readers of the COURIER, COMARO and the RECORD should have already learnt this from other people’s experiences.
4. The COURIER does not send people to conduct door-to-door surveys. And if that ever happens it will published prior to the survey, but residents will still be encouraged to phone the COURIER’s offices to speak to editor, Carina van der Walt or branch manager Christiaan Welthagen, to confirm the identities of the people.
5. Daylight hijackings are nothing new in the South of Johannesburg. Take the very same safety precautions you would take at night – especially taking notice of who is driving behind you and how long have they have been driving behind you.
6. PR Clr Tyrell Meyers has stressed this many many times – do not lease a hijacked house or room. Always ask for proof of ownership. Hijacked houses have resulted in violence many times – in one instance an infant was pepper-sprayed in Rosettenville during an illegal eviction.
7. The SAPS, JMPD and EMPD do not recruit via SMSs. And watch out for scammers requesting money prior to employment – do not let people take advantage of you when you are at your most desperate or vulnerable.
8. Dear residents, there is no such thing as paying a few connected people to have your municipal account balance reduced or erased. One resident has already helped City Power arrest some of the culprits.
