Spectre Studios Dancers are going to Jamaica

The One Move Diaspora Dance Conference changes venues every two years to a different country.

FIVE dancers from Spectre Studios Dance Company have been selected to be part of the One Move Diaspora Dance Conference to be held in Kingston, Jamaica, from November 25 to December 2.

The One Move Diaspora Dance Conference changes venues every two years to a different country. The five-day educational adventure is filled with master dance classes and lectures from the top choreographers and artistic directors in the diasporic folk/traditional, contemporary and urban street dance sectors. Additional components of the conference are historical and recreational excursions of the host country, and nightly themed exhibitions and showcases.

The five dancers selected are Alyssa Wax, Megan Smeers, Rachel Barlow Kearsley, Sabrina Cati and Tanicha Barends.

FUND-RAISING: Dancers getting ready to shake their tins to raise funds to go to Jamaica.

“We strongly believe that it will benefit them as dancers, inspiring dance performers and teachers in the years to come. The selected group’s incredible amount of talent and drive at such young ages is something that many could learn from. We feel that by attending this conference will allow for so much growth in not only their dancing but as young individuals growing up, experiencing all the rich and diverse cultures through dancing, as well as showcasing the incredible and diverse talent we have in South Africa,” said Dorothy Cati from the studio.

With only a limited amount of spots available, dance instructors at Spectre Studios did not want the Spectre Studios selected group to miss out on this life-changing experience.

“In order for our group to take part in the Wan Move Diaspora Dance Conference, Spectre Studios will be running many upcoming fund-raisers to help pay for the group to go on this amazing learning experience and journey. Spectre Studios will be blikskitting at robots on certain weekends to help us raise the funds needed as every rand counts towards getting our group to this amazing event in Jamaica,” said Dorothy.

The total amount that needs to be raised for Spectre Studios Dancers is R130 000.
