With help from the JMPD, the school has now implemented a scholar patrol programme.

ORMONDE Primary School has now implemented a scholar patrol programme where 12 learners have been selected to assist and co-ordinate the pedestrian crossing outside the school.

JMPD officers Naseem Sathar and Busi Makhoba trained the learners on April 20 on how to conduct the procedures of assisting learners to cross the road.

“The school didn’t have any scholar patrol procedures in place and so we got the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) to paint the pedestrian crossing outside the school. We also supplied the scholar patrol team with uniforms, which are reflective bibs and hats and temporary stop signs, to use. We have given the learners training today as this road is a big hazard,” said Sathar.

Grade Two educator Lebogang Mokgobola, who is also on the safety and security committee of the school, spoke of how this was motivated because of the high volumes of traffic experienced at the school caused by parents and public transport services. The school is also working on getting speed humps put on Verdant Road.
