JSPCA killed my eight cats

My heart is torn apart and I would like to see justice be done, for them ripping my heart out of my chest.

I went away on holiday for two weeks and left my cat Izzy (six years from the date of adoption when she was just six weeks old), Grey (two-years-old) and Izzy’s six, two-month-old kittens.

Upon my return, I was excited to see my cats, as two weeks away from them was torture. I was told that my mother called the JSPCA to take them all. This was not with my consent. I may have agreed to the kittens being taken to homes, but I would never agree to my Izzy and Grey going anywhere!

I phoned the JSPCA and I explained that I was the legal owner of the cats and they were never allowed to leave, as no consent was given from me. I then went to them to get my cats back, and at first they told me I would have to adopt the cats from them, which is crazy because they were my cats, that were unlawfully taken from me.

I looked around and could not find them. I phoned them about 30 minutes later to get a reference number, and when I called back the second time to get the correct reference number, the lady was finally honest enough to tell me that they put all my cats to sleep. This was done without my consent! My cats were given away illegally and they killed my cats illegally!

My cats were my everything. Six years with Izzy has now been ripped away. I won’t see my Grey again or hear him crying every time I give him kisses. This act was so heartless and barbaric! My mother says she did not send the cats to be put down, but instead, I come home to such.

All the JSPCA could say was ‘oh I’m so sorry for that’, but if they had done things the right way, they would have asked who the rightful owner is.

My heart is torn apart and I would like to see justice be done, for them ripping my heart out of my chest.

Inhle Mdlalose from JSPCA responded:

The Johannesburg SPCA (JSPCA) received a call from the cats’ owner’s mother on March 22, requesting that we collect eight stray cats from her premises. All calls that we receive from the public are screened by our controller and nothing suspicious was picked up on the day.

On March 23, the cats’ owner’s mother called again. We then arranged that the cats be collected by our driver from her premises as per request.

On collection, the mother assisted our driver to load the cats.

The cats were then brought to the JSPCA and kept for the pound period which is four days. The cats were only put to sleep on March 28 after they’re assessed and scanned. During this period nobody came to the JSPCA to collect the cats.

The JSPCA would like to kindly ask the public to microchip their pets for easy identification.
