Visit to Andy Titterton Wholesale Nursery

“In some of our garden beds we have trial plants which come from overseas."

JOHANNESBURG South Garden Club members visited Andy Titterton Wholesale Nursery in Walkerville on February 27.

HOT HOUSE: Staff spend many hours planting and dividing seedlings in the hot house

Shane Beckwith, who is the sales and marketing manager at the nursery, spoke to the members and took them on a tour of the nursery explaining all the steps in production.

“In some of our garden beds we have trial plants which come from overseas. The counties where we receive 70 per cent of our plants from are Holland, Israel, England, Germany and the USA. South Africa only contributes about one per cent to the plant market,” said Shane.

TRIAL PLANTS: In some of the garden beds trial plants from overseas are kept an eye on.

On the tour of the nursery, Shane showed the members the soil mixing station where everything is controlled and measured exactly. The members were in awe of the transplanting machine which does the job in a fraction of the time it takes to transplant seedlings by hand.

INTERESTING MORNING: Shane Beckwith, front centre, takes the club on a tour of the nursery.

After the tour members enjoyed refreshments and then got the chance to buy plants, which are not normally available for sale to the general public.
