BIANCA Boswell (24) has always had a passion for animals, ever since she was a toddler, and went on holidays with her parents and family to game reserves.

She spoke to the members of Eikenhof WI at their February meeting about the exciting times her job has brought her working as a game ranger at Entabeni Game Reserve. Entabeni means ‘place of the mountain’ and it’s a private reserve situated in the Waterberg in Limpopo Province in northern South Africa.

“Growing up with a family who loved the bush, I spent many happy holidays walking among trees and animals and looking at animal tracks. I knew then when I grew up I wanted to work with animals. My science marks weren’t good enough to study zoology so I did a game rangers course and received flying colours. I began working here in 2014 and have never looked back. I work for seven weeks 24/7 then take two weeks off,” said Bianca. “We get many visitors from overseas and it’s an honour to be able to show them all the animals in the reserve and take them out on game drives.”

Bianca spoke about the different species of animals and how they are divided into groups. Out of all the animals she said elephants are her favourites because “they are so cheeky and smart.”

Describing animals and their behaviour, Bianca said, “A community of animals is all kinds who live in one area and then you get solitary animals such as the Caracal and Serval. Monogamous animals live in pairs, such as Gibbon apes, wolves, barn owls and golden eagles to name a few. There’s also herds, impala, springbok and zebra.”

Bianca showed slides and photographs to illustrate her talk and the members thoroughly enjoyed the interesting morning.

The next Eikenhof WI meeting is on Wednesday, March 14 at 9.30am in the hall at St Andrew’s Church, Burger Street, Suideroord. For more information please phone Joy Boswell on 084 526 5857.
