Help Shine Chapter make a difference

The Lerato Educational Centre is appealing for volunteers for 2018 to help teach children.

THE PIRLS (The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) results, which were announced in December, highlighted the reading crisis in South Africa. As a result, the Shine Literacy Hour delivers a programme that provides individual literacy support to children.

PIRLS, together with the Shine Chapter at Lerato Educational Centre, is appealing to volunteers to help deliver the programme to more children this year.

Volunteers give support to children in Grade Two to help strengthen their reading, writing and speaking skills. Volunteers work with two children at a time and support the same children in each session.

No previous experience is needed and training, materials and ongoing support will be provided to volunteers.

Sessions take place Monday to Thursday at Lerato Educational Centre in Jacksons Drift.

Shine Chapter is a non-profit organisation that seeks to improve literacy outcomes for young children from disadvantaged communities in South Africa.
