Gassed men recover

“I got a call from Sergio informing me what had happened and drove to Pick n Pay immediately, but I honestly didn’t think it was going to be so serious and actually life threatening for my son,” said Grant.

LOGAN Chamier, Edward Mashakata and Gibson Ncube from Southern Plumbing had a lucky escape after being exposed to carbon monoxide fumes while they were unblocking a pipe from inside Pick n Pay Mulbarton, on January 10.

While Logan and Edward were inside the room in Pick n Pay where they were trying to unblock the pipe from, Gibson had gone into the manhole to supervise the job from the other side. With the machinery making a noise the men didn’t hear the door to the room close shut and Logan and Edward began to succumb to the fumes.

“Logan said he began to feel strange and realised the door had closed and made towards it to open it but collapsed before he could make it,” said Grant Chamier, Logan’s father. Gibson was calling from the manhole to Logan and Edward and when they didn’t respond he shouted for help.

Christene Botha, the store manager at Pick n Pay, said: “With assistance from Sergio Vieira (assistant store manager) and Pick n Pay and in-store pharmacy staff, we managed to carry the unconscious men outside and called for paramedics.

“I got a call from Sergio informing me what had happened and drove to Pick n Pay immediately, but I honestly didn’t think it was going to be so serious and actually life threatening for my son,” said Grant.

“When I got there Edward and Gibson were conscious and sat up but Logan was convulsing. I tried to get an asthma pump into his mouth, he is an asthma sufferer, but I couldn’t so I tried through his nose. Thankfully I heard the sirens and as soon as the paramedics arrived they took over,” Grant said.

Logan was taken to Netcare Union Hospital and admitted into ICU. Edward and Gibson were taken to another hospital for observation.

“I never believed it could have been this serious and thank our lucky stars he’s made it. He was actually joking in ICU on Thursday evening and chatting with the other patients.

“Pick n Pay and the pharmacist staff were phenomenal and without their speedy assistance, I dread to think what could have happened. I can’t thank them enough. Special thanks to Jason Jones, one of the paramedics who worked on Logan; he was fantastic,” added Grant.

Logan was discharged from the Union on Friday morning, with a clean bill of health.
