Talisman Foundation Open Day an eye-opener

The facility provides accommodation and support for up to 200 mental health care users with illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar, mood and personality disorders.

THE Talisman Foundation, The Hill which has provided mental health care for over 40 years had its open day on November 24.

The facility provides accommodation and support for up to 200 people with illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar, mood and personality disorders. The purpose of holding an Open Day was to educate people about the type of services they offer.

Psychosocial facilitator at the Talisman Foundation, Polly Tshabalala, said that Open Days such as these show that there is help and hope for recovery. “The tragedy of Life Esidemeni has highlighted how stigma and ignorance continues to be a deadly challenge for many,” she said. In addition, she highlighted that one in six people in South Africa suffers from anxiety, depression or substance abuse problems which is why such services are very much needed.

Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton said it was a real honour to open and close the event. It was very pleasing to see how talented the residents of this foundation really are. “I was particularly impressed with the dancing, singing and art work. It is Open Days like these that help break the stigma and silence of mental illness. The activities ranged from music to art exhibitions and auctions. There were also raffle prizes and performances by the residents,” said Clr Chrichton.

The other attendees on the day were: Mental Health NGOs, officials from psychiatric hospitals, partnership organisations, families and friends of people affected by mental health, Moffat View SAPS and the Department of Health.
